atlanto-occipital joint Flashcards

1
Q

describe atlanto occipital joint

A

One of the craniovertebral joint
Synovial joints
Allow wider range of motion
Atlas C1 vertebrae
Point of contact - concave articular surface from C1 make contact with convex occipital condyles of skull on each Side of foramen magnum
Movements - for nodding, small amount of lateral flexion and rotation
Joints - function; prevent excessive movement of Atlanto-occciptal joints
- anterior Atlanta occipital membrane, broad and continuous w/ ant. Longitudinal ligament
- made of strong fibres that extend from ant. Arch of atlas to ant. Margin of foramen magnum
- posterior Atlanta occipital membrane, continuous with ligament flavour broad but thin and weak
- from upper border of post. Arch of atlas to post. Margin of foramen magnum
