Face Recognition Flashcards
What is Bruce and youngs 1986 model?
Construct representation of face
Reps of face are used for diff things and are different for familiar and unfamiliar faces
Familiar faces activate a face recognition unit and every familiar face has one
They are linked to a persons identity node which are gateways to semantic info about them
Pins are linked to name generations
What is capgras ?
A familiar face replaced by an imposter
Damage to affective response
What is Fregoli?
Unfamiliar face are familiar people in disguise
Damage to pins
What are the two delusional misidentification syndromes ?
Capgras
Fregoli
What is prosopagnosia ?
Face recognition damage
What does the interaction activation competition model by button Bruce and Johnston 1990 explain?
Priming effects
What is priming ?
When you see the same face repeatedly you are faster to respond to it
What information is needed for recognition?
Orientation dependent - recognise more when upright
Contrast dependent - poor at recognising negative faces
What is the inversion effect?
Upside down faces are harder to recognise
What is the thatcher illusion?
When upside down you can’t notice any changes in faces looks the same but mouth for example could be bigger
What is first order relational processing ?
Basic face 2 eyes above nose and mouth. Primed to do this and see faces in things like objects
What is second order relational processing?
Fine grain spatial interrelationship between features
What is holistic processing?
Binds together whole face but actually 2 faces
What is the composite face effect ?
Upright faces evoke holistic processing
Inversion gets rid of this so can work out who the jumbled faces are when upside down
What is photo anthropometric?
Facial recognition technique
Using surveillance photos is unreliable
