Face and Pharynx Development Flashcards
What is the embryonic pharynx?
the anterior end of the foregut
What is the oropharyngeal membrane made up of?
pharyngeal endoderm and surface ectoderm
How many pharyngeal arches are evident?
3 (6 develop)
What dose each pharyngeal arch contain?
aortic arch vessel, ectomesenchyme from neural crest, myotomes, one cranial nerve innervation
What do pharyngeal arches contribute to the formation of?
jaws, larynx, hyoid bone, head muscles
What does the first pharyngeal pouch develop into?
tympanic cavity (middle ear) and auditory tube
What dose the second pharyngeal pouch develop into?
fossa of palantine tonsil and semilunar fold
What is formed by the first pharyngeal arch?
lower jaw and much of upper jaw (mandibular and maxillary processes)
What is formed by the frontonasal prominence?
nose, nasal cavity, primary palate, forehead, upper incisor region (ectomesenchyme from neural crest)
What are the 2 parts of the frontonasal prominence?
frontal prominence and medial/lateral nasal processes
What do the medial nasal processes form?
primary palate and nasal septum
What does the primary palate become?
incisive bone, upper incisors and upper lip
What do the lateral nasal processes give rise to?
alar cartilage of nose, nasal bone, lacrimal bone
What forms the nasolacrimal duct?
where the lateral nasal process meets the maxillary process of 1st pharyngeal arch
What forms the secondary palate?
extensions of the maxillary process called palatine extensions that meet at midline
