Fabric construction techniques Flashcards
How are fabrics woven?
by interlacing two sets of thread in a rectangular fashion
what are the two types of threads that are woven together?
weft threads and wrap threads
what are the properties of a plain weave?
frays easily
Name two uses of a plain weave
curtains and table linen
what are the properties of a satin weave?
Smooth shiny surface with a slide sheen, flipside is pale, snags easily and not durable
give two uses of a satin weave
evening dresses and wedding dresses
what are the properties of a twill weave?
Strong and enjoyable, where resistant, reversible and diagonal patterns form on the surface
Name two uses of a twill weave
Uniforms and curtains and upholstery
What are the properties of a dobby weave?
Create a small, regular, repeating or geometric design across the fabric and appears usually fine and flat but can also create different textures on the fabric
name two uses of a dobby weave
Shirts and dresses and furniture
What are the properties of a jacquard weave
Durable and good quality, fabric is woven tightly and is usually heavy and it does not fit easily and is therefore durable and expensive
name two uses of a jacquard weave
Tablecloths and napkins and brocade curtains or bedspreads
what are the properties of a pile weave?
A decorative weave method whereby piles are formed by weaving additional threads that create loops on the surface of the fabric and the loops can be cut to make the ends of the threads on the fabric appear frayed or can be left uncut
name two uses of pile weaves
uncut loops can be carpet
Cat loops can be towels
how is knitting achieved?
By weaving a single or several lengths of continuous yarn together
what are the two types of knitted fabrics
warp and weft knitting
what is the properties of warp knitted fabrics?
Firm type of weaving, less stretchy than weft knitting and does not ladder, can only be done by machine and retains their shape well
name a use of warp knitted fabrics
find lightweight fabrics (sportswear)
what are the properties of weft knitted fabrics?
Moderate stretching ability, loses shape easy, if a stitch is dropped the fabric will ladder and can be done by hand or machine
name two uses of weft knitted fabrics
Socks and underwear
how are bonded fabrics made?
They are glued and then fused together under pressure and heat
what are the properties of the bonding technique?
cheap, crease resistant, does not fray, remain stable and washed, tight and firm but not as durable as woven and knitted fabrics and tight but not very strong
Name two uses of the bonding technique
Diapers and sanitary wear
what are the properties of the felting technique?
Same as bonding technique
name two uses of the felting technique
Slippers and hats
