Twill Weave
A weave pattern using interlacing yarns that have a diagonal pattern (denim)
Jacquard Weave
A decorative fabric woven on a Jacquard loom. Because it is so complex, it is normally woven using a computer system.
Satin Weave
A woven fabric with an even surface known for its lustre. However, the long floating yarns on the surface mean it is easy to snag. It is therefore only suitable for products like lingerie and evening wear.
Difference between Satin and Sateen
Satin- Floating Warp Threads Sateen- Floating Weft Threads.
Pile Weave
Extra yarns woven into fabric and left as loops or cut to form a raised surface.
Velvet
An example of a pile weave, a warp file woven fabric that has a soft, tactile surface. Can be made from silk or polyester.
Corduroy
A cut weft pile fabric, which is characterised by cords or ribs running down the warp.
Name for vertical rows of knit stitches.
Wales
Name for horizontal rows of knit stitches.
Courses/Rows
Warp Knit
Uses a knitting machine. The yarn is fed to each needle and the fabric is created be making interlocking loops. Uses a Rashcel Machine.
Weft Knit
Rows of knitting interlock during the knitting process. Flatbed/Circular knitting machines. Knit in a tube.
Hand Knitting
Manual form of weft knitting.
Key features of Warp Knit
Hard to unravel Fast Better for filament, not staple Has elasticity, but keeps shape. Right and wrong sides very similar
Key features of Weft Knit
Easy to unravel ladders Very elastic Loses shape easily. Obvious right and wrong sides.
Non-Woven
Fabric made of layers of fibres strengthened from being bonded together using heat/ adhesive/ machines/ chemicals.
