F5: Chap 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Zone of Cell Division
A
- take place at apical meristems
- actively dividing meristems through MITOSIS
- when new cells are forming, the previously formed cell are pushed to the elongation zone
2
Q
Zone of cell elongation
A
- consist of cell that are increasing in size
- increase in size happens through osmosis and absorption of nutrients stored in vacuoles
- small vacuoles fuse together to form large vacuole (vacuolation)
- diffused water exerts pressure againts cell walls which pushes, widen and elongates the cell
3
Q
Zone of cell differentiation
A
- consistst of differentiating cell that differentiates once they reached maximum size
- cells differentiate to form permanent tissues such as cortex and phloem
- cells change their structure to become specialised cells that perform specific function
- exf Epidermal cell ~~~> guard cell
4
Q
Primary growth definition
A
Growth that occurs after germination and takes place in all parts of plant to elongate their stems and roots
5
Q
secondary growth def
A
occurs mainly in eudicots and small number of eudicots (shrub) to increase the circumference or diameter of plant stem and root.
6
Q
Difference between Primary and Sexondary growth
A
P: Do not have woody tissues
S: Have woody tissues
P: Thin bark
S: Thick bark
P: Absence of annual growth ring
S: Presence of snnuak growth ring
P: Epidermis, Cortex, Primary Vascular tissues
S: Bark Periderm, Secondary vascular tissues
