F&H - Topic 2 - Childhood Flashcards
What does Pilcher say the most important feature of the modern idea of child is
Seperatedness. Childhood is seen as a clear and distinct life stage and children in our society occupy a separate status from adults
What does Wagg quote about childhood being socially constructed?
‘Childhood is socially constructed. It is in other words what members of particular societies at particular times and places say it is. There is no single universal childhood, experienced by all. So childhood isn’t ‘natural’ and should be distinguished from mere biological immaturity.
Benedict’s 3 ways that non-industrial society treats children differently to industrial society.
- Take responsibility at a young age
- Less value placed on children showing obedience and authority.
- Children’s sexual behaviour viewed differently
Evidence to support Benedict’s idea of take responsibility at a young age
Punch’s study of childhood in rural Bolivia - once children are around 5, they are expected to take work responsibilities in the home and community.
Evidence to support Benedict’s idea of less value placed on children showing obedience and authority
Firth - study of Tikopia tribe in the western pacific - found that doing as you are told to is a decision down to the child, not something that is expected by an adult.
Evidence to support Benedict’s idea of children’s sexual behaviour viewed differently.
Malinowski - Trobiand islanders - found adults took a tolerant and interested attitude towards the sexual exploration of children.
