Q

Name the 2 ways in which Cohen criticises Merton.

A
  • Merton sees deviance as an individual response to strain and ignores that too much deviance is committed in or by groups, especially among the young.
  • Merton focuses on utilarian crime committed for material gain, eg theft or fraud - ignores crime eg assault or vandalism which may have no economic motive.

Q

Cohen focuses on working class boys, explain how he applies their educational success to crime.

A

As a result of being unable to achieve status by legitimate means (education) the boys suffer status frustration. They resolve this frustration by rejecting middle-class values and turn to the other boys in the same situation, resulting in them joining or forming a delinquent subculture.
