Qi Xu
Causes: Congenital deficiencies Lack of acquired essence Disfunction of LU, SP, KD Overexertion Chronic diseases
Signs/Sx:
Fatigue, lack of spirit, tired limbs, dizziness, SOB, spontaneous sweating, catches colds easily
T: pale + think white coat
P: forceless
Qi abnormalities
Qi Xu Qi Zhi (or Qi Yu) Rebellious Qi Sinking of Qi Collapse of Qi Locked Qi
Qi Zhi & Qi Yu
Causes:
Emotional problems
Phlegm, damp or food retention
Injury/trauma
Signs/Sx: Fullness Distention Pain (Qi Zhi- local; Qi Yu- systemic LV/GB channels) P: wiry (for Qi stagnation) *see notes (week 8)
Rebellious Qi
LU, ST, LV
-Many causes
(Gen.) signs/Sx:
Cough
Asthma
Sneezing
Nausea Vomiting Belching Acid reflux Hiccup
HA, distention of the head, redness of face/eyes, easily angered
(sometimes LV blood follows rebellious LV Qi, causing coughing/vomiting blood)
Sinking of Qi
Causes: Qi Xu (esp. SP Qi)
Signs/Sx:
Prolapse of ST, uterus, KD
(chronic diarrhea, dizziness- clear Yang not rising)
P: forceless
Collapse of Qi
Follows collapse of Yin/Yang
Causes:
Severe Qi Xu
Right Qi can’t overcome pathogen
Signs/Sx:
Body becomes severely depleted (after severe hemorrhage/profuse sweating)
Qi follows blood and BF, leaving body & causing sudden functional collapse
Locked Qi
Causes:
Qi locked in interior & can’t exit
External stimuli, severe Qi stag, severe emo problems
Signs/Sx:
Difficulty/inability to exhale
Leads to unconsciousness
(holding breath syndrome)
Blood abnormalities
Blood deficiency Blood stagnation Heat in the blood (cold in the blood) also, Blood desertion Blood dryness Blood cold
Blood is made of and by:
of: body fluid & ying Qi (Shen)
by: SP, HT, KD
Blood deficiency (causes, signs, Sx)
Causes: great loss of blood def. ST & SP lack of nutrients chronic diseases blood stagnation (body doesn't make new blood) Signs/Sx: pale lusterless complexion, pale lips, nails, dizziness, vertigo, palpitations, irritability, fatigue and lack of spirit, unhealthy thin body, stiff joints/tendons, dry eyes/poor vision, spasm/stiffness/shaking (convulsions), tingling extremities, cramping/scanty/pale/delayed menses P: thin T: pale, small, thin white coat
Blood stagnation
causes, signs, Sx
Causes: Qi stagnation Qi deficiency Cold, damp, phlegm, heat Injury Signs/Sx: purplish skin discoloration/rashes, purplish spots on tongue, cyanosis of lips and nails, sharp/stabbing pain, masses, bleeding P: choppy or irregular T: purplish
Heat in the blood
causes, signs, Sx
Causes: pathogenic heat emotional factors internal imbalances that create fire which enters the blood Signs/Sx: heat signs (fever, iriitability, manic behavior) bleeding (nose bleeding, vomiting blood) blood stagnation (purplish rashes) damage to BF (dry tongue/mouth) P: rapid (forceful or forceless) T: red (yellow or peeled coat)
Qi & blood relationship
- Qi moves the blood
- Qi nourishes the blood
- Qi binds and controls the blood
- Blood is the material basis for Qi
“Qi is commander of blood and blood is the mother of Qi.”
Qi stagnation and blood stasis
(usually seen together)
Causes:
Since LV promotes free flow of Qi, Qi stag/blood stasis have close relationship with the LV’s physiological Fx.
Since the HT dominates blood and vessels, disfunction of the HT may lead to blood stag, which in turn leads to Qi stag.
Gen. Signs/Sx:
distention, fullness, pain, purplish discoloration & rashes, masses, etc.
Qi not managing the blood
Cause:
Qi is def. and can’t control blood in vessels (may lead to reckless bleeding)
Signs/Sx:
nose bleeding, vomiting blood, skin blotches, blood in stool & urine, uterine bleeding
Qi collapses following blood
during severe hemorrhage, when large volume of blood is lost, Qi follows the blood and leaves the body. Thus, collapse of both blood and Qi will be seen.
Def. of both Qi and blood
Cause:
Deficiency of one leading to deficiency of the other.
Signs/Sx:
mixture of Qi def. and blood def. signs/Sx
Qi & blood can’t nourish channels and network vessels
Cause:
Qi & blood insufficient
Signs/Sx:
numbness, difficulty with body movement, dry skin, itchiness, problems with development of muscles and nails
Abnormal metabolism of BF
SP/ST- transportation & transformation function
LU- descending & dispersing function
KD/(UB)- Qi transformation & ascending function
LV- promoting free flow of Qi function
SJ- regulatory function
Disfunction of these may lead to abnormal metabolism of BF
Deficiency of BF
Causes:
Pathogenic dryness or heat, fire, high fever, febrile disease
Profuse sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive urination, loss of blood
Over usage of dry and pungent herbs that damage BF
Over exertion and chronic diseases
Signs/Sx (Jin):
dryness of skin and dif parts of body, thirst, constpation, scanty urine, dry tongue
Signs/Sx (Ye): same as above +
skin/muscles withered and loose (lack of nourishment); five center heat, tidal fever (Yin deficiency); tremors of hands and feet (internal wind); red dry cracked tongue with peeled or no coat
Tx:
tonify body fluid
Jin-Ye
make up BF
Jin: -SP & LU -easily consumed/damaged -easily replenished (drinking liquids) -moistens internal organs, skin and other tissues -ie: sweat, tear Ye: -SP & KD -hardly/slowly consumed or damaged -difficult to replenish -closely related to essence -in addition to moistening, assists with nourishing, development and reproduction -ie: semen, spinal fluid
Disfunction in distribution of BF
leads to formation of turbid fluid and phlegm
Causes:
(usually SP issue)
LU (can’t descend/disperse) -> phlegm accumulation in LU
KD (lack of Qi transformation); BF retention -> edema
LV (can’t promote mvmnt of Qi) -> Qi not moving water (phlegm fluid retention in body)
SP (disfunction of T&T) -> formation of dampness which will create phlegm
Blockage of TW
Signs/Sx:
phlegm, fluid retention (edema) in dif parts of body
Tx: transform/resolve phlegm
Five Endogenous Pathogens
Created as result of internal disharmonies
- internal wind
- internal cold
- internal damp
- internal dryness
- internal fire
Internal Wind (LV Wind) *see WB pg. 43-44 (graphs, P & T, elaboration)
Causes: hyperactive yang excessive heat/fire deficiency of yin deficiency of blood Gen. Signs/Sx: tremors, dizziness, convulsion, spasms, involuntary shaking and movement
Internal Cold
2 kinds: excess yin & deficiency yang
Causes:
irreg. diet
exogenous cold patho, esp. if one’s constitution tends toward cold
overexertion/chronic illness
Signs/Sx:
pale face, aversion to cold and cold limbs, contraction and stiffness of tendons and pain of extremities
(def. yang Qi of SP & KD -> giving rise to patho dampness & phlegm-fluid)
frequent, clear, increased urination, clear thin increased saliva and phlegm, diarrhea, edema
P: slow (forceful or forceless)
T: pale + white coat (thin or thick)
Tx: disperse cold
Internal Dampness
“A deficient Spleen creates dampness.”
Causes:
SP Xu
excessive consumption of cold, raw, sweet, greasy food
external dampness moving inward
Signs/Sx:
different in different parts of body (see WB pg. 46)
P: slippery
T: greasy coat
Tx: dry damp, resolve/transform damp, drain damp
Internal Dryness
Causes: prolonged/chronic illness profuse sweating, severe vomiting, diarrhea, hemorrhage excess heat that consumes BF Yin injury that occurs during febrile diseases *dryness mostly attacks LU, ST, LI Signs/Sx: dry/chapped skin, dry mouth/throat, dry lips, nose, eyes, fragile nails, constipation, scanty dark yellow urine P: rapid + forceless T: red + cracked + dry In addition to above: LU- cough and hemoptysis ST- red tongue w/no coating (ST Yin Xu) LI- dry stool Tx: tonify yin
