Eye Medical Terms Flashcards
what is acommodation
adaptation of the eye for near vision by increasing the curvature of the lens
Photophobia
the inability to tolerate light
Anisocoria
unequal pupil size, 2 different sizes
diplopia
double vision
-the perception of 2 images of a single object
Lacrimation
tearing
Excessive tearing
-epiphora
Strabismus
deviation in the axis of the eye (squint, crossed eye)
Scotoma
a blind spot surrounding by an area of normal or decreased vision
Nystagmus
involuntary rapid rhythmic movement of the eyeball a fine oscillating movement best seen around the iris
Ptosis
dropping if the upper lid margin over iris and possibly covering pupil
lid lag
abnormal white rum of sclera visible between the upper eyelid and the iris when a person moves the eye downward
Miosis
constricted fixed pupils
Mydriasis
fixed and dilated pupils
Myopia
nearsighted refractive errors in which near vision is better than far vision
Hyperopia
farsighted refractive error in which far vision is better than near vision
Presbyopia
Decrease in power of accommodation that occurs with aging
(because the lens loses elasticity becoming hard and glasslike)
Glaucoma
A group of eye diseases characterized by increased intraocular pressure, an optic nerve neuropathy
cataract
Opacity of the lens of the eye, a clouding of the crystalline lens
from clumping of proteins, that develops slowly with aging and
gradually obstructs vision
Cranial Nerve III (Oculomotor Nerve)
Causes constriction of the pupil by stimulating parasympathetic
branch and is the motor efferent path of the subcortical reflex
arc
Cranial Nerve II (Optic Nerve)
Is the sensory afferent path of the subcortical reflex arc
Cranial Nerves III (Oculomotor
Nerve), IV (Trochlear Nerve), VI
(Abducens Nerve)
Stimulates extraocular muscles to give the eye both straight and
rotary movement
Corneal reflex
Contact with a wisp of cotton stimulates a blink in both eyes (CN V)carries afferent sensation and CN VII carries efferent message for
blink)
Exophthalmos
Protruding eyeballs
Enophthalmos
Sunken eyeballs
Entropion
Lower eyelid rolling inward
Ectropion
Lower eyelid loose and rolling outward
