Measure IOP

Tx:
1st step: irrigate the eye with 1 to 2 L NS
- topical anesthetic
- Consult eye doc
Chemosis
Swelling or edema of conjunctiva, usually caused by allergies
Corneal abrasions Eti?
Contact lenses, fingernails, etc.
Corneal abrasions s/s
Foreign body sensation Photophobia Tearing May have conjunctival injection Decrease visual acuity
Corneal abrasions w/u
Visual acuity
Slit lamp eval, fluorescein
Seidel test

Using fluorescein dye to determine if there is a carneal laceration
Corneal abrasions treatment
Organic source: erythromycin
Contact lense use: Cipro, ofloxacin
large abrasions or central to vision: checked by eye doc <24 hours
Small abrasions 48-72 hours
Corneal laceration S/s
Full thickness lac: misshapen iris, hyphema, decreased visual acuity, shallow anterior chamber depth

Visual acuity
Positive seidel test
Lacerations of eyelid: which should be repaired by eye doc?
- Lacs within 6-8mm of medial canthus
- Involving the lacrimal duct
- Inner surface of the lid
- w/ ptosis
- Involving tarsal plate or levator palpebrae
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
Eti
Trauma, sudden increased venous pressure from valsalva maneuvers, HTN or spontaneous
Subconjunctival hemorrhage s/s
Blood in conjunctiva,
Normal eye exam
Normal visual acuity
Subconjunctival hemorrhage tx
No treatment needed. Reasurance, usually resolves in 2 weeks.
Coag studies if it happens a lot.
Hyphema def
Blood or blood clots in the anterior chamber
