Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Caused by: bacteria, viruses, allergies
Warm/moist compresses.
Hydrocortisone ointment.
STYE
Caused by: staph organism
Warm compresses.
Incision/drainage
Keratitis
Caused by: virus, spread of systemic disease
Antibiotics. Hot compresses. Steroids except with herpes simplex.
Strabismus (cross eyed)
Double vision, child tilts head or squints to focus.
Occlusion of unaffected eye to strengthen weaker eye
Detached retina
Caused by: trauma, diabetes, tumors
Bedrest. Area of detachment should be in dependent position. Affected eye or both eyes may be patched to decrease movement.
No hair washing for a week.
Cataracts
Objects appear distorted and blurred. Decrease in color perception. Double vision. Pupils change from black to gray or to a milky white.
Observe for post complications: hemorrhage, increase ICP, slipped sutures.
If lens implant(pupil constriction), if not (pupils dilated).
Avoid straining. Use night shields. Sleep on unaffected side.
Glaucoma
Cloudy, blurry vision. Loss of vision. Artificial lights appear to have halos around them.
Meds. Avoid tight clothing. Avoid use of mydriatics(atropine)
