Sx of Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Purulent, eye crusting, difficulty opening eyes, not puritis, photophobia, begins unilaterally
Keratitis
Inflammation of the cornea
Bacterial conjunctivitis in newborns
chlamydia, all babies get erythromycin drops at birth
Bacterial conjunctivitis in children <5yo
S. Pneumonia, H. Flu
Conjunctivitis dx
Bulbar vs. palpebral; check vision, examine lymph nodes; clinical
Viral conjunctivitis
Adenovirus, HSV, EBV, HZV; highly contagious
Viral conjunctivitis sx
Watery discharge, morning crusting (but can open eyes)
Viral conjunctivitis tx
Artificial tears, topical antihistamine
HZV with ocular involvement
Indicated by lesion at tip of nose; tx with acyclovir/valacyclovir & refer
Gonococcal conjunctivitis tx
Refer ASAP, to with ceftriazone 250 mg 1M + azythromycin 1 gm PO
Herpes simplex keratitis
Most common corneal infection in U.S.
Herpes simplex keratitis tx
Complicated; acyclovir/valacyclovir & steroids - refer!
Orbital cellulitis sx
Local sinus infection, edema, erythema, vision loss, proposes, ophthalmologist, headache, fever, malaise
Dacryocystitis
Inflammation of lacrimal sac
Dacryocystitis tx
Warm compress & systemic abx
