Eye Flashcards
Re. the retina, what/where are the photoreceptors?
Rods and cones are at the back of the retina - responsive to light
Cones
a. daytime vision
b. greatest acuity,
c. concentrated in fovea – central area of retina that contains only cones and has greatest visual acuity
Fovea
central area of retina that contains only cones and has greatest visual acuity
Rods
a. light sensitive,
b. mediate vision in dim illumination
How to activate rods and cones?
When light falls on them
What cells are activated by lights?
Bipolar cells
Where are the ganglion cells?
In the optic nerve
Tell me about the optic disk
It is where the ganglion cell axon exit eye in optic nerve. Contains no photoreceptors and creates a blind spot
Overview of visual system
- eye
- optic nerve
- optic track
- optic chiasm
- lateral geniculate
- optic radiations
- primary visual cortex – calcarine fissure – striate cortex
- association visual cortex
- or from optic chiasm to
- superior colliculus -> thalamus -> secondary visual cortex- for control of head orientation and eye movements to stimuli in periphery
hypothalamus
-for control of circadian rhythms for sleep-wake cycles
