extreme weather Flashcards
are tropical storms high or low pressure and where do they form⁸
low pressure, form 30 degrees from the equator, need water above 27 degrees
what do low pressure belts create
stormy and extreme climates such as rainforests
what climate do high pressure belts create
deserts because little air rises to condense leading to dry and mild weather
why do storms move east to west
east blowing trade winds near the equator
how do tropical storms form
area of warm water 5-15 degrees north of the equator form, evaporate and rise cooling to form clouds. this movement causes wind as air rushes in and releases heat energy to power the storm, an eye forms which is calm and mild, eye wall around it has the most extreme conditions. it follows the warm water and picks up other storms to grow.
how is frequency, distribution and severity changing due to climate change
the sea is over all warmer, giving it more energy and causing it to be more severe, they form after hot periods of weather in autumn making it hotter for longer so more frequent, they would form at higher latitudes because of climate chage
3 typhoon haiyan facts
November 2013. winds up to 315kmh, 5m high storm surge in tacloban, category 5 hurricane
3 typhoon haiyan long term responses
cash for work programme, thousands of homes built away from areas at risk, cyclone shelters set up
short term responses typhoon haiyan
over 1200 evacuation centres, aid agencies provided food and shelter, us carriers helped with search and rescue
where does UK weather come from
cold air from the Arctic north causes heavy snow and strong winds. stroms from Atlantic west bring storm rain and winds, east brings severe winter weather and south brings drought and heatwaves
3 examples of UK extreme weather
strong winds Feb 2014: 21000 suffered power cuts. European heatwave 2013 caused over 20000 deaths. drought in 2012 South East England.
causes of storm desmond
low pressure in Atlantic, autumn 2015 causes saturated soil, buildings on floodplains, Cockermouth at confluence of rivers
3 impacts of strom desmond
5200 homes impacted by flooding, water quality affected by debris (aquatic life), 500mil of damage across cumbrua
2 primary and secondary impacts mpacts of typhoon haiyan
primary: 90% of tacloban destroyed, 40000 buildings damaged. secondary: 6300 died in tacloban and disease outbreaks
one planning prediction and protection strat used in the uk
protection: flood barriers
planning: land use zoning
prediction: warning systems for extreme weather
