Extreme Weather Flashcards
What is condensation?
Water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid , forming clouds
What is Evaporation ?
When the sun heats up water in rivers lakes or oceans and turns it into vapour or steam. The water vapour or steam leaves the river lakes or oceans and goes into the air.
What is precipitation ?
When so much water has condensed that the clouds get heavy water falls back to the earth in the form of rain hail sleet or snow .
What is urbanisation ?
Urban areas that are typically made of concrete which is impermeable - water cannot filtrate unto the ground, therefore surface runoff happens.
What is deforestation?
Trees remove moisture from the ground through the roots , therefore cutting down trees leads to an excess of water in the soil, leading to surface run off.
What is steep relief ?
Steep relief is when water flows over steep surfaces quickly which slows down infiltration. Therefore , rivers fill up quickly.
Prolonged rainfall
Constant rain saturates the ground which means infiltration slows down
What are 3 effects of the Cumbria flood?
- a number of bridges were swept away including poorly bridge.
- approximately £28,000 of damage per household.
- tens of thousands of homes without power for several dates.
- national rail services were cancelled.
What is the Formation of a hurricane ?
1) The sun heats up the ocean at 27’c
2) the ocean heats the air above
3) rising warm air evaporated and starts to spin
4) the air then cools and condenses to form clouds
5) more air is sucked in , causing very strong winds to form.
What is relief rainfall?
Warm moist air forced to rise over high areas , the air then cools and condenses forming clouds. It rains , air descends warms and becomes drier.
What is globalisation ?
The increase of connections between countries through trade , technology, transportation and culture.
What are TNCs?
Transnational co operations operates in 2 or more countries. E.g Nike
