Coasts Flashcards
What are the 2 different types of waves ?
- destructive waves
- constructive waves
What are the factors of destructive waves?
- weak swash
- strong backwash
- steep high waves that are close together
- come into the coast quickly
- create a steep beach
What are the factors of constructive waves?
- strong swash
- weak backwash
- low waves
- gentle beach
- more gently sloping with longer gap between them
What are the four types of erosion?
- Hydraulic action
- abrasion
- attrition
- solution
What are the four types of transportation ?
- suspension
- solution
- saltation
- traction
Define hydraulic action
Water is forced into the crack in the rock . Is compressed and forces the rock apart
Define abrasion
Loose rocks are thrown agains the cliff wearing away at the rock like sandpaper
Define attrition
Loose rocks are swirled around and are worn in Smaller , rounder pieces
Define solution
Seawater dissolves material from the rock
Define suspension
fine sediment is carried along in suspension in the water
Define traction
Large pebbles and cobbles are rolled along the seabed
Define saltation
Small pebbles are moved when on pebbles hits another causing it to bounce
What is longshore drift?
Longshore drift transports sediment among the beach in a zig zag route
