What is the definition of extradural haemorrhage?
Collection of blood between the skull and dura mater.
What causes extradural haemorrhage?
Almost always severe head trauma
Rupture of middle meningeal artery
What are some clinical features of extradural haemorrhage?
Lucid interval
Stuporose (ipsilateral dilated pupil, contralateral hemiparesis with rapid transtentorial coning)
Bilateral fixed, dilated pupils, tetraplegia and respiratory arrest follow
What are some investigations for extradural haemorrhage?
Urgent CT brain (hyperdense biconvex lens shaped lesion)
What is the management of extradural haemorrhage?
Mild: conservative management with close observation
Severe: urgent neurosurgical evacuation of haematoma
