Extraction Of Aluminium By Electrolysis Flashcards
Why can aluminium not be electrolysed if it’s not in molten state.
Because the ions aren’t free to move.
What is used to dissolve aluminium oxide?
Cryolite.
Why is it difficult to melt aluminium oxide normally?
Because it’s melting point is very high and it would be very expensive.
Name all the equipment required for the electrolysis of aluminium.
Steel case
Graphite anode
Graphite cathode
Cryolite
Aluminium oxide
What happens once the aluminium oxide is molten?
It sinks to the bottom of the cell.
What happens at the negative electrode,(cathode)?
Aluminium ions (Al3+) receive electrons (3e-) and are reduced to aluminium atoms (Al).
What happens at the positive electrode?(anode)
The oxide ions (2O2-) lose electrons (4e-) and are oxidised to oxygen gas (O2)
