Exothermic And Endothermic Reactions. Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction?
When the reaction releases energy to the surroundings, this reaction has a negative enthalpy change.
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction with a positive enthalpy change. Takes energy in from the surroundings.
Compare the reactants and products in an exothermic reaction.
The reactants have a higher enthalpy than the products.
Compare the reactants and products in an endothermic reaction.
The products have higher enthalpy than the reactants.
What is the name of the energy required in order for a reaction to start?
Activation energy
Why must there be activation energy?
To break bonds.
In an exothermic reaction, where does the activation energy often come from?
A heat source like a flame, match or Bunsen burner.
