Extraction Complications 1 Flashcards
why might you have difficult access during an extraction?
- trismus patient
- crowded teeth
- malpositioned teeth
You are extracting a patients tooth and are met with abnormal resistance, what things may cause this?
- thick cortical bone
- shape/form of roots
- number of roots
- hypercementosis
- ankylosis
what is ankylosis?
tooth has NO PDL, tooth directly bonded to bone
If there is to be an alveolar bone fracture during extraction of a tooth, what usually fractures?
Buccal plate when extracting canines or molars
If there is to be a jaw bone fracture during extraction of a tooth, what usually fractures?
Mandible

What should you do if a patients jaw fractures during extraction?
- inform patient
- post op radiograph
- refer to max fax unit
- ensure analgesia
- if delay for any reason give antibiotic
How can involvement of the maxillary antrum during extraction be diagnosed?
- size of tooth
- radiographic position of roots in relation to antrum
- bubbling of blood
- Valsalva manoeuvre
How would you manage involvement of the maxillary antrum during extraction?
- inform patient
- encourage clot
- suture margins
- antibiotic
- post op instruction
- nose blowing instructions
If a tuberosity fracture occurs during tooth extraction, what should be done to manage this?
- dissect out and close wound or reduce and stabilise
