Extra terms/definitions Flashcards
Endemic
Disease present in a small area or community
Epidemic
Rapid spread and number of cases to wider community and region of people.
Pandemic
An epidemic/disease that has spread over a whole country or multiple, even over continents.
Fomite
Inanimate objects that carry disease and other infectious agents.
Vector
Infections spread by the bite of an infected species. A host.
Vehicle
Carried, converged, transported, etc. (I.E Mosquito carrying malaria)
GPS (Global positioning system)
Network based on 24 or more satellites that circle the Earth helping with a user’s position in longitude, altitude and longitude. Being able to track speed, bearing, distance (and to destination), etc. Helps with the tracking of emergency supplies and vehicles or can help track the height of waves, path of a cyclone, etc.
GIS (Geographic information system)
GIS uses computer-based software to collect, analyse and store information into maps. Consisting of various layers such as infrastructure, roads, or vegetation. This can help us understand the potential risk and hazard of an impact of a disaster and assess what resources and techniques are to be deployed. Mobilising rescue teams and alerting the population.
Remote sensing
Obtains information about the Earth’s surface collecting data via space or aircraft including satellite imagery or aerial photography. They can provide us with base layers for a GIS map and are extremely useful for hazard management and assist risk reduction. For example monitoring data about the oceans or atmosphere.
