Litotes
Use of understatement for rhetorical effect - double negative for emphasis (He’s not intelligent, it’s not bad,)
Aphorism
A concise statement that is made in a matter of fact - underlying tone of authority (If you don’t work you will get bad grades)
Archetypes
An original idea that is now not original - stereotypes used as examples. The audience will immediately relate to it (Romeo and Juliet a symbol of eternal love)
Anagram
Same letters jumbled - sense of discomfort and order (debit card - bad credit)
Anastrophe
Reversed order of the noun and adjectives (he spoke of times past and future) - dramatic impact to dwell on the words
Allegory
A story that has a deeper meaning (Animal farm actually being about communism)
Asyndeton
Purposefully leaving out a joining word (reduce, reuse, recycle)
Stream of consciousness
Thoughts on paper without any sense of logic/order
Meter
Creates rhythm and enhances the flow of poem (iambic pentameter)
Paradox
Draws attention to a certain truth, self contradictory
Couplet
Emphasises two lines, enables the poem to develop a theme or mood more clearly
Lexis
The vocabulary of a language, as distinct from its grammar, the total rock of words and idiomatic combinations in a language
Semantics
Branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning. Two areas are logical semantics, concerned with matters such as sense, reference, presupposition, and implication. Lexical semantics are concerned with e analysis of word meanings and relations between them
Phonology
The system of contrastive relationships among the speech sounds that constitute the fundamental components of a language
