When is a result significant on Chi-Squared
calculated value > critical value
When is a result significant on Spearman’s Rho
calculated value > critical value
When is a result significant on Mann Whitney U
calculated value =/< critical value
When is a result significant on Sign test
calculated value =/< critical value
Rhyme to remember significances
Chi is high, and so is Rho, all the rest are equal to or low.
What stats test do you use for nominal data and independent measures
Chi squared
What stats test do you use for nominal data and repeated measures
Sign test
What stats test do you use for ordinal data and independent measures
Mann Whitney U
What stats test do you use for ordinal data and repeated measures
Wilcoxon
measures of central tendency
mean, median, mode
measures of dispersion
range, variance, standard deviation
Type 1 error
False positive- accept alternative hypothesis and reject null as the behaviour is due to chance.
Type 2 error
False negative- Rejection of alternative hypothesis and acceptance of the null as the IV really is having a significant effect on the DV.
Is a researcher more likely to make a type 1 or 2 error
We are more likely to make a type 2 error, however the practical application of the research may indicate which type of error it is better to make.
