What is a civil law
A civil law is a law that, if breached, you cannot go to prison but you can be fined up to £500,000
Name 2 reasons why firms follow civil laws
- Creates good publicity to attract new staff and customers

Define copyright
Copyright is a legal ownership of materials that prevent others from using them. It is an automatic right (don’t have to apply for it)
Define intellectual property
Intellectual property is intangible property that is the result of creativity. Eg - a song melody
Define what trademark is
A company can register for a trademark for its business name, slogan, logos and other items that’s essential brand the company/indicate the source of the good
Define national minimum wage
National minimum wage is the minimum pay per hour workers of school leaving age are entitled to by law and is reviewed yearly by the government. The rate for each UK age group is different
Define the national living wage
The national living wage is a new minimum wage for those aged 50 and over. It is the minimum amount of pay per hour that workers are legally entitled to by law and is reviewed each year by the government
What are the three aspect of the sales of goods/consumer rights act
- Good must fit its description
- Good must be of satisfactory quality
- Good must fit the purpose specified
Define what the contract law is (2 things)
- A legal binding between two or more parties that sets out the framework of the rights and obligations
- Against the law for one party to change the contract without the other knowing
Define what the data protection act is
The data protection act controls how personal data about employees and customers is stored and used by a business
If personal data about employees/customers must be used, what must the business ensure
It must be used for lawful purposes, for a limited time and must be kept securely
What 3 things do you need planning permission to do
- Build something new
- Make a major change to a building
- Change the use of a building
Name 2 reasons why it is important to get planning permission
- So you don’t build on someone else’s of protected land
