External Heart Flashcards
Right atrium
Forms the right margin of the heart
Appendage: ear-like right auricle (right atrial appendage)
Left atrium
Forms much of the posterior margin of the heart
-appendage: finger like left auricle (left atrial appendage)
Right Ventricle
Forms much of the anterior margin of the heart
Left Ventricle
Forms much of the left margin of the heart and apex
Right and Left atrioventricular grooves and
Anterior interventricular groove
They’re generally covered by fat under the serous visceral pericardium (epicardium)
Inferior surface of the heart
4 pulmonary veins that enter the left atrium
The left atrium forms the BASE OF THE HEART
Posterior left atrioventricular and
Posterior Interventricular Grooves
Posterior left atrioventricular groove is occupied by the coronary Sinus (venous structure)
Right Coronary Artery
- branch of the ascending aorta
- passes along the coronary sulcus (right atrioventricular sulcus) to posterior surface of the heart
Branches:
- anterior right atrial branch (arises shortly after the origin of the right coronary artery, and courses superiorly underneath the right auricle toward the superior van cava. Has a branch to the SA node)
- Right marginal artery: found along the inferior margin of the heart
Left Coronary Artery
- branch from the ascending aorta
- in between the pulmonary Trunk and ascending aorta
Branches:
- anterior Interventricular artery (left anterior descending artery): one of the 2 terminal branches of the LCA. Found in the anterior interventricular sulcus with the great cardiac vein
- circumflex artery: found within the Coronary sulcus wrapping around the posterior aspect of the heart
Great cardiac Vein
Ascends superiorly along the anterior interventricular groove, enters the left atrioventricular groove and when it turns at the obtuse margin of the heart it becomes the coronary sinus
Small Cardiac Vein
- enters near the termination of the Coronary sinus
- originates near the marginal Artery along the inferior margin of the heart
Middle cardiac Vein
Runs with the posterior interventricular artery in the posterior interventricular groove.
Empties into the Coronary sinus
Posterior Interventricular Artery
One of the 2 terminal branches of the RCA as it extends around the acute margin of the heart
The other terminal branch continues on in the left atrioventricular groove to form a potential anastomoses with the circumflex artery
