External Forms of Social Control Flashcards
Coercion
Can be physical or non violent
Physical coercion may take the form of bodily harm, imprisonment or the death penalty
Nonviolent coercion can be strikes, boycotting and non cooperation, prisons use the threat of loss of liberty as a form of no violent coercion (suspended sentence)
Fear of punishment
Threat of punishment is a deterrence
what are the two forms of deterrent?
Individual
General
General deterrence
Applicable for the general public
‘getting tough on crime’ policies promote general deterrence- mandatory minimum ( a life sentence for murder, 7 years for a 3rd drug charge, 3 years for a 3rd burglary)
Individual deterrence
Specific to an offender
deter and individual from committing further crimes
eg: suspended sentence, conditional discharge
