External Features (Dorsal, Lateral, and Ventral Views) Flashcards
Spinal Cord
Function: Carries information from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain
Medulla
Function: control autonomic functions (breathing, heart rate).
Pons
Sends signals to the cerebellum and the forebrain; mediates sleep and arousal.
Mid brain:
- Superior colliculli
- Inferior colliculi
Regulates eye movement and pupil dilation; assists in motor control.
Hypothalamus
Regulates autonomic nervous system, synthesizes hormones; controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, and circadian cycle.
CerebroSpinal Fluid:
Clear watery fluid which fills the space between the arachnoid membrane and the pia mater.
Cerebellum Vermis:
Proprioception
None
None
Cerebrum: frontal lobe function
Reasoning, personality, and attention.
Cerebrum: parietal lobe
Integrating sensory information from the body (somatosensation), processing spatial information, and temperature perception.
Cerebrum: temporal lobe
Processing and perceiving sound; memory.
Cerebrum: occipital lobe
Processing and perceiving vision.
Medial longitudinal Fissure
Divides the cerebrum into left and right hemispheres.
Gyri and sulci
Increase surface area of the brain and allow it to fit within confines of the skull.
Grey matter
Mostly neuronal cell bodies involved in sensory perception, memory, muscle control, hearing, and emotions.
