EXTERNAL - Cultural Deprivation Theorists Flashcards
Bereiter and Engelmann
Consider the language spoken by b families as inadequate for educational success s is disjointed and ungrammatical
* doesn’t suit education language - put at a disadvantage
- linguistic skills
What do CD theorist argue about intellectual and linguistic skills?
LI black families are lacking of stimulation and experiences meaning they are at a disadvantage hen starting school as lacking the reasoning and problem solving skills
What do CD theorists argue about attitudes and values?
See lack of motivation as the main cause of B children failure.
- they are socialised into subculture that instils atomistic and living the now which education does not value > underachievement
whereas w pupils socialised into mainstream culture instilling ambition and competitiveness which education values > achieve
Moynihan
Argues that black headed families y lone mothers children are deprived of adequate care
* as mother has to take on both instrumental and expressive role
* no role model for boys
Sees cultural deprivation as a cycle where inadequately socialised children grow up and is the same to their children
Pryce - study comparison of cultures
Asian = more cohesive —> more resistant to racism = higher self esteem and achieve
Black Caribbean = less cohesive —> less resistant = lower self esteem = underachievement
Argues this difference is due to colonialism
Sewell - on fathers
Argues not due to absent of fathers but due to lack of fatherly nurturing
* teen boys find it harder to navigate emotional and behavioural teenage stress
* resort to gangs as find preserve love / anti school role models which are illustrated on the media
Sewell - interviews
Found the greatest barrier to b educational achievement is peer pressure
B- nurtured by rap videos - expected to be tough and strong anti school
Asian - nurtured through hours of schoolwork - school focused
Concludes black pupils need greater expectations placed on them to raise aspirations
Lupton - argument
Argues authority in Asian house is similar to that if school - advantage
Found behaviour in house expected -> knock on effect in school positive as parents approve of school policies and are more likely to support students > achieve
Lupton study
Study of 4 schools
2 white
1 Pakistani community
1 mixed
FOUND teachers reported worse discipline in white schools despite fewer FSM
Teachers blamed this on lower levels of parental support
While ethnic parents see education as a way up society and this motivates children more
Francis - Chinese families
High value placed on education
* time
* resources
* goal of attending and pursuing education
Evaluation - Keddie / Lawrence /driver
Keddie —> victim blaming / blame the-ethnocentric school not parents
Driver —> ignores positive affects of minority households such as lone parent mothers give girls role models and motivation to get independent success
Lawrence —> Argues black students underachieve use to racism not low self esteem
