Extent of the Growth of Democracy in Britain Flashcards
The Second Reform Act, 1867, increased the electorate to what amount?
2.5 million (1 in 3 men) as opposed to the prior amount of 652,000 voters (1 in 7 men) from 1832.
Bonus Question:
Why could it be argued that the Representation of the People Act 1918 was not a suitable reward for the efforts of women during the war?
It enfranchised women aged 30 years or more, however most of those who aided the war effort were < 30.
Why did Britain not meet the Second Hallmark of Democracy prior to 1867?
Parliamentary seats were distributed with little thought of the population of the towns they were given to (small population towns could have too much representation in parliament while a high population town had little to none), bribery was commonplace, as well as intimidation/blackmail from landowners.
What did the Ballot Act of 1872 and the Corrupt and Illegal Practices Act of 1883 do respectively?
Ballot Act: Implemented secret voting.
Corrupt and……. : It restricted the amount that could be spent on campaigns and what it could be used for.
