Extensions and modification of Basic Principles Flashcards
Complete dominance
A condition where the dominant allele completely masks the effect of the recessive allele.
Only 1 allele in the genotype is seen in the phenotype
Complete recessiveness
The failure of one pair of genes (alleles) to be present in an individual
Co Dominant
Both alleles in the genotype are seen in the phenotype
Incomplete dominance
A mixture of the alleles in the genotype is seen in the phenotype
Allelic series
Describes different mutant alleles of a gene that cause a range of phenotypes.
Null allele
A mutation that results in either no gene product or the absence of function at the phenotypical level
Hypomorphic allele
A type of mutation in which the altered gene product has partial function
Wild type allele
The allele that encodes the phenotype most common in a particular population. Describes a gene that is found in its natural, non-mutated form
Loss of function allele
A type of mutation in which the altered gene lacks the molecular function of the wild type gene. Synonyms Null mutation
Lethal alleles
Allele that causes death at an early stage in development - often before birth - so that some genotypes do not appear among the progeny
Recessive lethal allele
Only expressed in the homozygote. Kills individuals that are homozygous for the allele
Dominant lethal allele
Kills both heterozygotes and homozygotes
