Allegory
story/poem where characters, settings, and events stand for other people/events or for abstract ideas/qualities
ex. Animal Farm
Anthropomorphism
attributing human characteristics to an animal or object
Apostrophe
calling out to an imaginary/dead/absent person or to a place/thing/personified idea (typically begins w/ ‘O’)
Colloquialism
word/phrase in everyday use in conversation and informal writing
Denotation
dictionary definition of a word
Dialect
speaking that’s characteristic of a certain social group or inhabitants of a certain geographical area
Didactic
form of non/fiction that teaches a specific lesson
Foil
character who acts as a contrast to another character
Satire
writing that reduces shortcomings of people or institutions in an attempt to bring about change
Stream of Consciousness
writing that portrays inner (often chaotic) workings of a character’s mind
Vernacular
language spoken by the people who live in a particular place
