expt 5: Flashcards
What is the goal of experiment 5?
isolate a saturated fat from Nutmeg.
What is the purpose of a reflux?
- A reflux apparatus allows for facile heating of a solution, but without the loss of solvent that would result from heating in an open vessel.
- In a reflux setup, solvent vapors are trapped by the condenser, and the concentration of reactants remains constant throughout the process.
- It also allows you to control the temperature in a controlled manner.
Describe the principle of purification?
- Remove unwanted impurities that are in an organic compound.
- This is done via vacuum filtration once the product has been recrystallized via the addition of 95% ethanol alcohol and heat.
- Vacuum filtration works to purify by capturing the solid product and extracting the liquid from it.
- Given the weight of crude product: .152 g add 10.0 ml of 95% ethanol to the product, calculate this amount?
1.52 mL of 95% ethanol.
What is the percent recovery of your product if you isolated .05 g of trimyrisitn and began with .755 g of nutmeg?
6.6%
What is the percent recovered from recrystallization: you produce .152 g of crude trimyristin and .05 g of pure product?
32.89%
What kind of molecule is trimyristin?
triglyceride.
If you obtained 0.15 g of crude trimyristin, you should perform recrystallization using?
- what substance.
- given that you must add 10.0 ml per gram.
1.5 mL of 95% ethanol
1.25 g of crude cocaine (MW = 303.35 g /mol) was purified by recrystallization to obtain 2 mmol of pure cocaine (1 mmol = 10-3 mol). What is the percent recovery of cocaine from the recrystallization process? Do not enter the “%” sign as part of your answer. For example, if your answer is 86%, enter only 86 in the answer box.
49
In this experiment recrystallized trimyristin will be isolated by?
Vacuum filtration using a Hirsch funnel.
