Expt 11: Flashcards
Predict the relative order of reactivity for alcohols in SN1 and SN2 reactions:
primary alcohols: ?
secondary alcohols: ?
tertiary alcohols: ?
primary alcohols: fastest Sn2
secondary alcohols: fastest Sn1
tertiary alcohols: Fastest Sn1 : If OH leaves, if just the H leaves, SN2
- What observations and reasoning would indicate progress of the reaction: homogenous vs phase separation?
The phase separation simply means that the reaction is taking place and when the separating stops and two distinct liquids are seen, the products have formed.
- Phase separation is a creation from a single homogenous mixture.
- Therefore: Start with homogeneous - reaction takes places - phase separation
If you start with 5.43 mmol (1 mmol = 10-3 mol) of the alcohol and obtain the product in 70% yield, what is the weight in g of the product you isolated?
Do NOT include units (g or grams) as part of your answer. For example, if your answer is 0.318 grams, only enter 0.318 in the answer box.
0.5
