What is the difference between the expressive skills and performance skills?
When discussing expressive skills this relates to the CHARACTER, when discussing performance skills this relates to the ACTOR
Focus
Focus refers to the actor’s concentration when performing. It can also refer to the ability of the actor and director to focus the audience’s attention on specific moments on stage.
Timing
This performance skill is linked to the dramatic elements of rhythm, tension and mood. It can include the pace at which lines are delivered, the use of stillness and silence and pauses in the delivery of the lines. Actors need to develop skills in comic timing and dramatic timing.
Energy
Energy comes from the performer embodying the character (s) and action, sustaining role within the performance. A strong sense of energy conveyed by the performer allows the audience to ‘believe’ and engage in the performance.
Actor-audience relationship
The actor-audience relationship is developed and maintained by the actor (s) in a performance. The way the audience is arranged and how the actors use the space will impact on the actor-audience relationship.
