Describe the role religion has played in the past in Australian public life
First settlers where Church of England and Catholic although declining ever since. Primarily Christian in the past due to the sisters providing education, healthcare, orphanages and refuges.
Explain the role religion plays today
Social Role - education, healthcare and welfare
Political Role - the defence or support of key catholic beliefs in the political realm. (Conscience Vote) Also 70% of parlimentarians are religious. Constitution 116 states that religiouns are free to exercise their beliefs
Explain how a religion sees its role in public life
Christianity sees itself as:
* ‘Prophetic” faith that seeks to mend the world
* Redeem the world by preaching, actively helping people
* Care for others and work toward their flourishing
* Not by imposing on others their vision but by bearing witness to Christ, who embodies the good life
Explain how others see the involvement of religion in public life
- teens hold positive views of different faith groups
- Many teens had a largely positive view, a large number were concerned about the impact of religion on public life
- over 80% had a positive view on each religion
- 44% thought religion caused more problems than it solved, with 50% thinging religious beliefs were intolerant of others
