Semantic field of depression ‘misery ‘ ‘agonies’ ‘melancholy’ emphasises the mental effects of war.

Seems to be dreaming ‘is that we are dying’ , and ‘god seems dying ‘ shows he has lost all hope , he has nothing else to live for.

Q

Form and structure of the poem?

A
  • half rhymes to show the uncomfortable conditions , it isn’t a nice rhyme
  • first person point of view gives read access to the thoughts of somebody with first hand experience
  • metre is jarring and un pretty with 12-14 syllables per line, again owen is showing the unnatural situation and the antithesis of being civlised
