A

-written in 1917 whilst Owen was fighting in ww1
-war was romanticised and seen as glorious and noble
-Owen was hospitalised for PTSD - he suggests war can kill a man psychologically
-most wars were fought in Europe where the weather was extreme
-winter of 1916-1917 was so cold that many soldiers lost fingers and toes to frostbite
