In this poem exposure the weather is a big part of it as they are classing the weather as an enemy as it is against them “Merciless iced east wind that knives us…” this shows its just as harmful and knife as being personified as the soldiers enemy

The … showing they are just waiting for some type of noise which whould show where the enemy is

This specific quote is used in this poem alot to emphasize that its just going on and on and is never ending.
“We only know war lasts,rain soaks,and clouds sag stormy. Dawn massing in the east her melancholy army”
Personification reinforcing nature is an enemy against them.
