Why in news ?
On march 25th National Institute for transforming India in collaboration with Institute of competitiveness released the 2nd edition of export preparedness Index 2021
What is the index?
It is data driven index that accesses the export readiness of states(sub-national) and also critical areas crucial for sub national export performence
Export readiness= export performence + export potential
who prepares the export preparedness index 2021?
NITI aayog and Institute for competitiveness(IFC)
how is the index beneficial ?
It serves as a benchmark or standard against which performence of States and UT’s can be measured against thier peers
This will help them understand thier oppurtunities and challenges and can make policies to tackle them(kinda like mock analysis)
what are the different groups of states and UT’s
Coastal states Himalayan states Landlocked states UT’s
What are the four main pillars of the index(criteria’s) on which states are ranked?
Policy ,Business ecosystem,export ecosystem, export performence
How many sub-pillars does the index have?

What were the main challenges brought by the EPI 2021?
- Intra and inter regional differences in export infrastructure
- weak trade support and growth orientation across states
- lack of R&D infrastructure to promote complex and unique exports
what is the primary goal of the EPI2021?
Its primary goal is to create competition amongst all states and UT’s to promote exports (through policies and measures)
Who topped the EPI 2021?(overall)
Gujarat for the 2nd time with a score of 78.86 followed by
2nd Maharashtra(77.14)
3r Karnataka (61.72)
4th Tamil Nadu
(loser)last was lakshadweep(2.12) and 2nd last arunachal pradesh
