Explosives Flashcards
What is an explosive?
Sudden release of a large amount of energy
- In the form of blast waves
- By propulsion of debris
- By the emission of radiation
What are 4 types of explosions?
Atomic
Electrical explosions
Physical explosions and
Chemical explosions
Name 4 oxidation reactions
Rust
Combustion
Deflagration
Detonation
What are low explosives propellants?
- Used to accelerate projectiles, such as bullets, rockets or fireworks
- Reaction proceeds via deflagration
- Speed of reaction is slower than the speed of sound
- Some common low explosives include’ smokeless powder (quick reaction), black powder (even faster than smokeless) and pyrodex
What are low explosives pyrotechnies?
-Devices that contain combustible material designed to provide a visual or audio effect
(fireworks)
What are high explosives?
-Detonates- Reaction speed> speed of sound
-No confinement required
• Primary high explosives
o Sensitive to chock and heat
o Detonates, priming caps (ammo)
• Secondary high explosives
o Less sensitive, more powerful
o Requires large energy input to detonate
o Numerous commercial and military applications
What are 2 types of analysis?
Intact explosive analysis:The analysis and identification of suspected explosives or their key constituents- also known as Bulk analysis
-Trace explosive analysis :This is usually the analysis of post-blast debris and residues to determine what substances may have been responsible for an explosion
Describe intact explosive analysis
- The class of explosive and the identity of major constituents are reported
- Usually cannot identify explosives from specific manufacturers or source
- Sample may be identified as a material that is not an explosive
