Q

What is LIMS?

A

Laboratory Information Management System:

  • Assigns a unique number to each case
  • Sequentially numbers evidence items
  • Creates a unique barcode for each evidence item
  • Records an accurate chain of custody
  • Items secured in a container under a unique tamper-evident seal
  • Numbered seals are initialed by the submitter when present or by the CRO person processing case
  • A receipt is generated listing all items submitted for the case
  • A seal number is registered in LIMS and is used to track the container and its contents
  • Containers are put into a secure storage are until they are delivered to the appropriate section
  • The scientist assigned to the case takes ownership
