exploring life Flashcards
Properties of Life
order evoltutionary adaptation response to the environment regulation energy processing growth and development reproduction
Levels of biological organization
- Biosphere
- Ecosystem
- Communities
- Populations
- Organisms
- Organs and organ systems
- Tissues
- Cells
- Organells
- Molecules
Eukaryotic Cell
A eukaryotic cell is subdivided by internal membranes into various Membrane-enclosed Organells. The largest Organelle is the nucleus.
Prokaryotic Cell
In a prokaryotic cell, the DNA is not separated from the rest of the cell by enclosure in a membrane-bounded nucleus.
Negative Feedback
The most common form of Regulation is NEGATIVE FEEDBACK, in which accumulation of an end product of a process slows that process.
eg.
body temperature rises -> sweat produced -> body temprerature drops
Positive Feedback
the endproduct speeds up its production
eg.
chemicals released by platelets attract more platelets for clotting
Taxonomy
branch of biology that names and classifies species
Classifying life
Species (Art) Genus (Gattung) Family Order Class Phylum (Stamm) Kingdom Domain
Life’s Three Domains
Bacteria: most diverse and widespread prokaryotes
Archaea: prokaryotes living in extreme Environments
Eukarya: protists (inicellular eukaryotes), kingdom plantae, kingdom fungi, kingdom amalia
