A ship what is fast and easy to manoeuvre
Patron
A person who supported the explorers to finance there ships
Spice trade
The spice trade refers to the trade between historical civilizations in Asia, Northeast Africa and Europe. Spices such as cinnamon, cassia, cardamom, ginger, pepper were used.
Carracks/Naos
Large ships both had square and lateen sails. Bigger than caravels so they could carry more cargo. Especially spices.
Navigation
Calculate ships position, find out direction the ship Is going and work out what speed the ship is going.
Cross-staff/quadrants
Measured latitude.
Astrolabe
It found out whether the ship is North or South of the equator. Called latitude. It measured the angle of the sun or North Star. Inaccurate in heavy seas.
Compass
Measured direction. Magnetic needle pointed to magnetic North. Kept in a case on deck. It meant it could be used in a storm.
Log and Line
A sailor threw a piece of wood (log) into the sea from back of boat. This was attached to reel of knotted rope (line). The amount of rope pulled by the wood in one minute was then measured. Time measured using sand hourglass.
Scurvy
Not having any fresh fruit or veg led to a deadly disease called scurvy.
Hardtack
Biscuits that were commonly eaten
Cartographers
Made maps
Portalan charts
Maps made of the coastline on voyages of discovery.
Cape of good hope
The king of Portugal changed the name of the tip of Africa from Cape of storms to Cape of good hope
Captain / First mate
The captain was in charge of the ship. He would be assisted by a first mate.
