Explanations: Induction and Engine Airflow Systems Flashcards
Why does the carburetor accumulate ice before any other part of an aircraft?
Because the temperature drop inside the carburetor as the fuel is converted from a liquid into a vapor will cause carburetor ice to form even when there is no visible water in the air.
Why does using the carb heater when it is not needed causes a decrease in power?
It enriches the mixture because hot air is less dense.
What is the volumetric efficiency of an engine?
the ratio of the fuel/air charge taken into a cylinder, to the charge the cylinder will hold at normal atmospheric pressure.
What is bootstrapping?
First discovered by the pirate Bootstrap Bill, bootstrapping is the process by which the turbocharger increases the intake air density, which increases engine power, which turns the turbocharger turbine/compressor faster, which leads to even denser air, and so on and so on. Engine’s require additional components to keep this process in check such as wastegates and Blow off valves, etc…
What is a turbocharger’s critical altitude?
The highest altitude at which it can maintain a desired manifold pressure.
What are the exhaust bypass assembly, the density controller, and the differential pressure controller?
The density controller and the differential pressure controller, acting independently, determine how much oil is bled back to the crankcase and establishes the oil pressure on the piston controller the waste gate valve.
The density controller is designed to limit the manifold pressure below the turbocharger’s critical altitude and regulates bleed oil only at the full throttle position.
The differential pressure controller functions during all positions of the waste gate valve other than the fully open position, which is controlled by the density controller.
