Eg. Calling your girlfriend Amy because you used to date Amy
What is retroactive interference
Forgetting because new information is being recalled, blocking the recall of old information
Eg. Saying buongiorno instead of bonjour after learning French then italian
What is retrieval failure
Failing to recall due to a lack of cues in the environment that were present at the time of making a memory when trying to recall
What is context dependant retrieval failure
Failing to recall because of a lack of external cues at the time of recall when compared to creating the memory
What is state dependant retrieval failure
Failing to recall because of a lack of Internal cues at the time of recall when compared to creating the memory
What were Godden and Baddeley’s procedures
4 groups of participants had to learn a word list and recall each item
One group learnt on land and recalled on land
One group learnt underwater and recalled underwater
One learnt on land and recalled underwater
One learnt underwater and recalled on land
What were Carter and Cassaday’s procedures
4 groups of participants had to learn a word list and recall each item
One group learnt while under a drug that made them drowsy and recalled while under a drug that made them drowsy
One group learnt normally and recalled normally
One group learnt on a drug that made them drowsy and recalled normally
One group learnt normally and recalled whilst on a drug that made them drowsy
Who performed best in Godden and Badeley’s study
The groups that had similar learning and recalling environments
E.g. the group that learnt and recalled underwater
Who performed the best in Carter and Cassaday’s study
The groups that had similar learning and recalling states
E.g. the group that learnt and recalled under the drug
