gender identify
a person’s internal, deeply held sense of being either male or female
gender dysphoria
distress caused by a conflict between a person’s gender identity and their birth sex
sexual orientation
a person’s physical and romantic attractions, usually referred to as being straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual
cisgender
someone whose gender identity matches their birth sex
transgender
someone whose gender identity differs from the sex marked on their original birth certificate
trans man
someone whose birth sex was female and identifies as male
trans woman
someone whose birth sex was male and identifies as female
transsexual
a somewhat outdated term used by some transgender people to describe themselves. It typically implies that the person has undergone some kind of medical transition.
crossdressing
when someone wears clothing traditionally worn by the other gender. People who identify like this usually don’t want to transition their body or live full-time as the other gender.
drag
when someone dresses in the clothing of the other gender for performance
transvestite
an outdated term that refers to people who cross-dress. It is now considered a demeaning term.
SRS: sexual reassignment surgery
genital surgery that a transgender person may undergo
transition
the term used to describe the process of changing from one gender tot the other. Taking steps such as changing your names and/or medical intervention.
