How does it work? (Action)
A
- It’s a type of antidepressant that alters the balance of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters
- One of the things we think can cause depression + other conditions= an altered balance of neurotransmitters
- SSRIs mainly affect one called serotonin

A
Once daily

How do you take SSRIs
A
- orally in tablet form

How long do you have to be on SSRIs for?
A
- stay on it for 3-6mths after you start to feel better
- taper off by gradually decreasing dose

How long will it take for them to feel effects of the medication?

- 4-6 wks

Do you need to take any tests while on SSRIs?

What are important side effects?

GI
- Diarrhoea
- N&V
- appetite + weight change
Headaches
Drowsiness
Anxiety- first 2 wks
Withdrawal

How can I prevent some of these side effects?
A
Drowsiness- take tablet @ night

None in particular

What are the contraindications for SSRIs?
A
- if feeling suicidal then we would refer you to a specialist where they would decide on what the appropriate treatment would be
- past psychiatric illness
