How do bisphosphonates work?
A
- prevent the bone from being broken down + helps to rebuild new bone

How often do you take bisphosphonates?
A
- can take one dose once/ wk
OR - smaller doses daily

How do you take bisphosphonates?
A
- on empty stomach
- Swallow tablet whole w/ a full glass of water
- take at least 30 mins before food or anything other than water
- sit upright for 30 mins after swallowing- decrease risk of reflux
- wait 30 mins- 2h to eat
- don’t lie down until eaten something

- headache
- heartburn, bloating + indigestion
- GI- diarrhoea/ constipation, black stools, abdo pain

A
- pregnancy
- dysphagia
- stomach ulcer
- severe renal impairment

A
- may be Rx Ca2+ and vit. D supplements
- take at a different time to bisphosphonates
