Explaining Phobias Flashcards
What is the two process model of phobias?
Acquiring the phobia through classical conditioning and then maintaining the phobia through operant conditioning.
Little albert by Watson
Watson paired the whitr rat with a loud bag when little albert saw it. This created an association between the two and little Albert began fearing the white rat.
The two process modle has practical applications.
Systematic desenstiation involves using classical conditioning to create a new positive associations between a previously feared CS and a new UCS. THis is often very sucessful in treating phobias.
However this modle cannot always explain more complex phobias.
For example like agoraphobia this is the fear of leaving the house. Unlike other phobias agoraphobics are not avoiding the feared stimulus , but they are more concerned withmaintainging percieved saftery.
